Life on the Prairie

Surprise

on May 19, 2016

My husband and I own a few rental houses and last week, we rented a dumpster to clean one of them out so we can get it ready for new renters. We had some old carpet to get rid of out of another rental and after work on Friday, my husband went by to put the carpet in the dumpster and found something a little surprising. Inside one of the Ziploc bags you get from the deli was a tiny little kitten. That’s right, someone had thrown away a kitten! I decided he should go back over there to make sure it was the only one. Once he got over there, he heard more and after about 45 minutes of digging, he pulled 2 more out of the dumpster. Some of the neighbors decided to take them.

It infuriates me that someone could be so cruel. If you don’t want to deal with kittens, then you need to get your cats spayed or neutered. It is NEVER acceptable to throw away an innocent creature like garbage!

We now have a new addition to our family. Friday, we estimated that the kitten was between 2 and 3 weeks old. He or she (we aren’t sure yet) is so tiny and has completely stolen our hearts. When I say we, I mean my husband and I. The rest of our critters are just trying to figure out how long this squeaking little hairball is going to be here. They will warm up to the baby eventually. I can’t wait until we know for sure whether or not it is a little boy or girl so we can give it a name. We have made that mistake before. Our cat Bruno used to be called Libby. 😀

It has been quite a few years since I was taking care of a baby but I will say right now, I think human babies are easier than taking care of kittens. Kitty has been here a week and I am exhausted. For the first 2 days, we couldn’t get it to eat. It’s now eating plenty about every 3 or 4 hours. I feel like I smell like sour formula constantly. Kittens that are being bottle fed, also have to be burped. You also have to help them pee and poop. And they don’t wear diapers so it goes everywhere. Usually on me. They are also very bitey and slicey. Their tiny little teeth and claws are like razors. We are hoping to start wet food in the next day or so and hopefully that will let me get a little more sleep.

With this addition, we are up to 3 dogs and 3 cats. Even teams. If we rescue anymore critters, we are going to have to buy a farm.

Just to give you an idea of how tiny this kitten is, he/she is sitting on a normal sized dish towel that is folded in half.
